Instagram isn’t against you!
With all the talk about the algorithm and reach, it can feel like the platform hates you.
But the point of IG is it wants you to utilise all its features. Its aim is to keep you on there, using and utilising it to its fullest potential.
I know that as a small, conscious business owner…. you want to focus your time and energy on the important work you do. But when used effectively Instagram is an amazing platform for growth and building an audience.
After all, you can only do what you’re great at, if you have people to sell to. So, to get you started, here are 5 things to start doing right now that will help you grow on Instagram in 2023.
The reality is, video isn’t going anywhere, and it’s a great way to reach new people so it’s worth leaning into as a small business owner. The good news is that you don’t have to show your face or talk on camera! There are so many creative ways to showcase your products and services without ever feeling like you have to ‘show up’ every day.
You can film B-roll (clips of you going about your day and of ‘stock’ video) and overlay text, education, or words of wisdom. Pair this with a trending audio and you’re on to a winner!
You can also film your products in action – eg: if you’re a coach or yoga teacher with a new online program – film a timelapse of your computer with you working on it, or show your products in action, being used by your customers.
Reels and video will also benefit your existing followers as they’re more likely to see them on their feeds.
The thing that will set you apart from your competition is your story, your why, and your values. So share those on your socials. Have a highlight on your page to tell your customers what you care about and what you stand for.
Have regular or pinned posts that tell your story into business ownership – as a conscious creative business owner your audience will connect with you over those stories.
Demonstrate your values and mission within your content regularly. You can do this by being explicit in your content, on stories, your bio and your highlights.
Most people make the mistake of talking about the features of their product or service way more than the benefits. You want to make sure you do BOTH in order for your customers to understand exactly what you’re selling and how it will positively impact them.
The features are the facts about what you’re selling including the main information about your products. For example:
The benefits are the emotional elements of your products and are the non tangible elements, for example:
When you can talk about both of these selling points your customers will really start to understand exactly what you’re selling and why they need it.
Once you’ve started to attract customers you need to make sure your Instagram Bio is primed and ready for people to hit that ‘FOLLOW’ button and start engaging with your content.
To make sure your bio is ready for growth, check you have all of these in place:

This doesn’t mean posting and showing up daily – don’t worry! But it means finding some sustainable consistency with how and when you post.
To start with, commit to posting 2-3x per week and maintain that for 4-6 weeks. Then once you’ve nailed that, up the posting frequency. The most important thing is that you don’t post frantically for a month and then do nothing for 2 months.
