I’m here to show you how to make sales when you’re scared of feeling sleazy.
“Pushy” “Yuck” Ugh”, I hear ya babe. Selling can feel gross.
Quite often, making sales the part of running a brand that business owners hate doing.
But for entrepreneurs and business owners sales and selling is a fundamental part of your business. I mean…it’s literally the route to income so it’s integral to work out how to make sales work for you.
Selling has certainly got a bad reputation, but I am here to show you that when you find your unique sales groove selling can be easy and even fun!
There are four stages to find your sales groove:
Before diving into selling I believe it’s important to take a step back and reflect on your existing mindset and beliefs around selling.
Deeply checking in with where you are emotionally at with selling at this point is the groundwork for evolving your own techniques.
Use journaling to ask these key questions:
After answering these questions, you may uncover some negative attitudes about money and that’s totally ok and often common.
For me, my family has always been in sales, so selling has been a part of my upbringing and is a completely normalised element of business. My dad and sister both work in sales, my background is marketing (which is essentially sales)… so it feels very natural to me. But at the same time, I’ve experienced being sold to in many negative ways – so I can see how selling can feel uncomfortable when done badly!
Your own experience with sales – good or bad – can really impact how you as a business owner show up and sell. So it’s important to be aware of. It’s all about understanding where you are authentically at and having an awareness of these feelings and how they may impact your own selling.
So you’ve brought awareness to where you’re at currently with sales. You have taken the time to truly see and evaluate where you’re currently at. I congratulate you on that, nice one!
Stage two is about creating a bespoke method for your own selling. It’s time to throw out the rulebook and find your own magical way of selling that is true to you.
Make a list of the words, feelings and attributes that come to mind.
Similarly, think about sales experiences that have felt bad.
I like to be sold to with care and attention. I want to be seen and heard. It’s important that I have space to think, and a soulful human-to-human connection with someone who really ‘gets me’ and my needs.
By recognising how you like to be sold to, this creates a template for how you can sell to others.
I sell to others making sure that every client feels seen and heard. Allowing them space to consider, ask questions and without the ‘so what do you think?’ sales funnel full stop at the end of the conversation.
I hate pressure when I’m being sold to, so I don’t use pressure in my technique.
I’m not encouraged to buy via paid advertising, so I don’t use paid advertising.
Essentially, the energy that you prefer and react positively to when being sold to is the energy you should put into your own selling.
That is why there is no effective script for selling.
That’s why the rulebook can go in the bin!
Because building your own selling code can be, and should be a reflection of you and your list of unique selling preferences. This is how you’ll find authenticity in selling because your approach will be free of all the sales tropes you hate and full of all of the vibes that make you feel comfortable and confident.
Now that you’ve put in the work to find your own unique selling groove it’s important to stick to it with all your might!
Avoid being swayed by someone else’s technique, or those historic feelings of what is ‘expected’ with sales.
This is what being a Rebel Entrepreneur is all about, it’s about taking the power back! Leaning into the power of you and making your own rules.
Along your path you’ll come across cookie-cutter techniques for sales. They’ll look attractive as an ‘easy’ solution, a way of avoiding the time and effort into crafting your own selling code. But these one-size-fits-all techniques are not sustainable!
I want you to have a thriving, sustainable and lifetime business with legacy. This is only possible when you are completely aligned to the uniqueness of you. Generic selling techniques can only lead to flash in the pan success, they will feel uncomfortable, like you’re wearing someone else’s shoes!
The fourth stage requires some time and patience.
Your client and potential customer pool needs time to seed and grow. You cannot expect people to just show up and buy from you instantly.
They need time to see and connect with you. Time to recognise the value in what you can offer and time to connect with your energy (whether they realise this is happening or not!).
There’s a bit of foundational work that has to take place too:
A Understand who your potential customers and clients are and what they need
B Provide them with value that makes them understand that you see and hear them and you know what they need
Trust comes with time. Put in the time and aligned energy the people will show up. As the old saying goes, reap what you sow!
